Penang Hotel Equatorial Buffet

Monday, February 1, 2010

Over the holidays, I have the pleasure of visiting Penang yet again and this time I was invited by Vivien's relatives from Australia for a buffet feast at Penang's Hotel Equatorial. With a new DSLR in hand, here is my wonderful experience there.

The enormous chocolate fountain rained good, syrupy goodness onto the many types of 'candy on a stick' delicacies there. The chocolate itself is just slightly sweet and not overpowering.

Vivien just LOVES her chocolate marshmallows.

The dessert spread is replenished frequently with many types of cakes and puddings, although a lot of them have a certain 'flour-ish' taste to it, making you feel full but not in a great way. The bubur chacha is excellent.

On this table lies all the fresh food like salad, sushi, wagyu soba (pathetic little pieces of them), tauhu berisi and various other stuff that didn't really interest nor delight me. But it does offer an opportunity for a little bit of vegetable in your meal.

The star of the show is certainly these fresh oysters. They are extremely fresh and a large variety of condiments are provided for you to take these oysters with such as lime, Tabasco, etc. It tasted very fresh although not something I am used to eating, however I was told the reason why the buffet is so expensive is due to these fresh, free-flowing treats. Great for those who love their oysters I suppose. The steamed prawns on the other hand was nothing to shout about.

A very interesting corner that I wanted to try but didn't really bother. Basically it's a bakery offering something like a dozen different types of bread from all over the world, but you have to cut them up yourself and lather the butter/kaya on your own. I didn't see anybody else visiting this corner though.

The buffet offers TWENTY different types of condiment to go with your food/porridge. Great food doesn't need condiments though, unless you are here for...porridge.

The lightly grilled salmon and eel is definately a must try. Early on when the crowd is big, these are snapped up as soon as they are served. Near the end, this was on display and nobody wanted to have any. I would have preferred them to be a bit warmer, but I guess the air conditioning means these thin slices are cool by the time you get to your seat.

On the outside, the barbeque lamb is not that great, with the heavy mutton smell lingering in the air. The briyani rice went great with the various rendang dishes inside the restaurant though.

For the international visitors, satay is a must have. But having been spoiled by better grades of satay elsewhere in Malaysia, I find this wanting.

The party is actually to celebrate Marylin's birthday. Isn't she cute?

The buffet was excellent and several of the dishes were a definite winner, especially the rendang and oysters, if you like those. But being in Penang, even after such a heavy meal at Equatorial Hotel, I find myself wanting to wash all that food down with nothing more than a simple Char Koey Teow served with ice cold Lime juice. A truly awesome experience.
